3 Status Check… As we approach the end of CM220 and the due date for the Unit 9 Project, are you floating happily, treading water, or sinking below?

Reading: The Kaplan Guide to Successful Writing, ch. 17, review the website for Food, Inc, review a selected chapter related to a common writing error in William Strunk, Jr.’s Elements of Style, available at Bartleby.com.Food, IncWilliam Strunk, Jr.’s Elements of Style Invention Lab: Describe a common editing concern you have (passive voice, apostrophes, commas, fragments) and how the chapter you selected from Bartleby.com helped clarify any questions you had. Discuss any other challenges you face as you revise and edit your draft this week and prepare the multi-modal component of your final project. Project: Final project—5-7 page revision of paper and multi-modal presentation of Big Idea Unit 9 Learning Activities

As a thinker? What did you learn about the process of writing? What skills did you develop that might help you in the future? What did you take from the larger conversation with others? Guidelines for Revised Essay Final Draft must be a SUBSTANTIAL revision of the draft you wrote in unit 6. Arguments should be defended--remember that the goal in persuasion is to convince your audience of the value of your position. Consider and respond to counter arguments Aim for strong, clear, readable sentences. 6

Revised Essay Checklist Does your essay… Include a compelling introduction with a logical persuasive thesis statement and a conclusion that effectively wraps up the essay? Show original thought? Support main points effectively and clearly (no logical fallacies, outside sources used to support arguments where appropriate) and skillfully refutes counter-arguments without ignoring data that contradicts the student’s thesis? Refer to at least 5 sources in the body of the paper and on the references page? Meet 5-7 page length requirement? 7

Letter to the Editor Guidelines Your Unit 9 final project must include a revision of your formal writing sample from Unit 5—probably a letter to the editor. 8

Guidelines for Multi-Modal Presentation/Visual Overall message is clear and effective Minimally, five facts, arguments, and/or insights are presented Audience is considered in technology choice and design Research sources are cited in APA format Presentation is considered original (except for cited material) 10

Reflection Piece You will also write a reflection piece that answers the following questions in paragraph form: –What did you learn about yourself as a writer? Overall Unit 9 Project Guidelines Does your project… Contain paragraphs that are well-developed, coherent, and logically organized? Include a style appropriate to the assignment and sentences that are engaging to read as well as clear, concise, and precise? Reflect attention to detail including being free of serious grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors? Follow APA guidelines for the document layout and citations? 14
