2 Day 1 Grammar 1. Are you prowd of your new bike. 2. We sold peaches and they sold beans. 1. Are you proud of your new bike? 2. We sold peaches, and they sold beans.

3 Day 1 Writing  When you write a response for a test it is good to use vivid adjectives (describing words) and verbs to make your answer better.  Look at this example on the transparency.  The writer chooses words that make the actions and feelings clear to the reader.

4 Village Market This poem tells about the excitement and activity at an outdoor market in an African village. Listen for details about the characters and setting.

5 The village market Is a feast For the ears, eyes, and nose. Women and children chatter and giggle. Goats and sheep bleat and baa. Chicken cackle. Women dressed in bright clothes and headbands Wrap their babies on backs, Balance their wares on heads. A colorful collection of mouthwatering fruits: Pineapples, mangoes, and oranges Invite a bite. The fragrance of palm trees Foaming and fizzling in gourds Lures drinkers to sellers. The smell of sweet and sour mix in the air Makes your head wonder What’s going on in your nose.

6 Listening Comprehension  Partner 1: Who are the characters in the poem?  The characters in the poem are the people who go to the village market; women and children.  Partner 2: How does the author describe the setting of the poem?  He describes the setting using his senses of sight, sound, and smell.

7 Concept Vocabulary  Fragrance- a sweet smell  Lures- to attract something or someone by offering something desirable  Wares- things for sale Talk with your partner and decide where these three words would go on our concept vocabulary web.

9 Character and Setting  A character is a person who takes part in the events of a story.  Writers tell some things about characters. You can also figure out about characters by their words and actions.  The setting is when and where the story takes place.  A writer may tell you about the setting or you may figure out the setting from details in the story.

12 Day 2 Writing  SHOW DON’T TELL (transparency 5B)  It is important for the person reading your story to be able to make a picture in their mind about what is happening.  We will write a narrative paragraph tomorrow so we can practice “show, don’t tell”.

13 Prefixes (before) & Suffixes (after)  The prefix un- means not or the opposite of. Example: Unhappy-not happy See if you and your partner can come up with some more words that have the prefix un-.  The suffix –ly means in a way Example: Slowly-in a slow way See if you and your partner can come up with some more words that have the suffix –ly. Read “A gift for Cletus” on pg. 119. Look for words that begin with un- or end with –ly. Use the prefixes and suffixes to figure out the word meaning.

15 Fluency Day 2  Listen how I read on pg. 125. Notice how I pause at commas.  Now you practice with your partner. Listen carefully and notice if your partner is pausing at commas.  Partner 1 go first.

17 Day 3 Writing  Think about the first time you did something. It might have been going to a new school, moving to a new place, or joining a team. Write a narrative paragraph to a friend showing how you felt. Read the prompt carefully Make a plan Support your ideas using facts and examples Check your writing

21 Day 4 Writing Do all details support the topic of doing something new? Do my sentences make sense? Do my words create pictures for readers? Are my words spelled correctly?

22 Look Back and Write  Look at page 132. Yeyo says kind words to Saruni. Did the kind words make Saruni happy? Use details from the selection to tell how he felt and why.  Yeyo’s kind words do not make Saruni happy. Saruni is sad. He doesn’t have enough money to buy a bicycle. Yeyo tells him that he will have enough money one day. She also tells him how nice he is for trying to help her, but Saruni still feels sad.

23 Day 5 Grammar 1. Tom made a choyce and he was happy with it. 2. Toyes and games is ecpensive. 1. Tom made a choice, and he was happy with it. 2. Toys and games is expensive.

24 Day 5 Writing  Write a personal narrative about a time that you worked hard for something you wanted. Tell:  What you wanted  Why you wanted it  And how you worked to get it
