2 Objective  For the student to analyze the assault of the Battle of Bunker Hill, and explain what effect it had on the rest of the Revolutionary War.

3 Battle Site  Took place in Charlestown, Massachusetts  Was bloodiest battle of Revolutionary War

4 Who Was It Between? The Battle was between the British troops of the Boston Garrison and the American Continental Army.

5 Geography  In Charlestown took place on Charlestown Peninsula.  Charlestown is across the Charles River from Boston

6 Cause of Battle  Colonists faced British Army in Boston.  Lieutenant Thomas Gage planned to take over hills on Dorchester Heights.  Colonists stopped advancement to protect freedom and land which started battle. Lieutenant Thomas Gage.

7 Prelude to Battle  The Colonists and British set up their spots on the Peninsula before the Battle.

8 Generals and Lieutenant  American Generals consisted of :  Dr. Joseph Warren  Israel Putnam  William Prescott  British General consisted of:  Sir William Howe  Lieutenant Thomas Gage

9 Assault  Battle started early on Friday, June 16, 1775.  British were so confident in themselves they charged up without muskets loaded.  American waited at top of the hill and didn’t fire until they saw the whites of the British soldiers’ eyes.  British dropped dead drastically and Americans had taken out a good portion of army.

10 Assault continued  British drove them back and then took over the hill.  Americans retreated, but took out more men then the British did.

11 Map of Assault  As you can see the colonists had men set up on Breeds Hill, and Bunker Hill. The British came straight towards the Colonists and a few came to the outside of the hill, but Colonists had troops also set up on Bunker Hill.

12 Effects After Battle  Boosted Americans confidence to realize that the British were not unstoppable.  George Washington later marched colonists up to Dorchester Heights, and watched redcoats retreat from Hill  So even though British won the first battle it wasn’t long until Colonists had hill again.

13 Fun Facts  The Battle of Bunker Hill is called Bunker Hill even though it had mostly taken place on Breed’s Hill. Both hills are on the overall structure of the Charlestown Peninsula, and the Colonists had men on Bunker Hill needed for backup. ( Shown in the map of assault).  It is believed that the American troops would have won the battle, but ran out of ammunition so they had to retreat so they didn’t get killed.
