Grammar class three : Echoes

This is the third, last and shortest of the classes for Grammar week Today we’re going to talk about one more thing you can do with auxiliary verbs. This is what I call “echoes”, and what you call in French “Reprise d’auxiliaires”. This is used both in written and spoken English.

A few examples. The government has never funded such activities, but the local council has. Freeware does not require payment and neither does shareware. No building can stand without firm foundations, and neither can a marriage. That way, my young friend won't be turned into a zombie, and neither will anyone else for the moment. Examples

We drank too much but Vanessa didn’t. I love Picasso, and so does my Mother. He is French but his children aren’t. I won’t go but Mike will. The party wouldn’t approve but the government would. More examples
