1 South Africa and Apartheid  May 5 – 6, 2014  Objective: Students will develop a chronology of events in South African history through texts, timeline and written response.  Warm-Up: “World Cultures and Geography”. Study the maps on p. 279 and p. 304. Answer in complete sentences in your notebook:  Who colonized South Africa?  What resources are found in South Africa?

4 Gandhi Assessment  You must answer in complete sentences and write at least one full page.  Use RACE from the movie and your answers to the seminar questions.  Do not write “I think”.  Turn in for a grade.

5 As you watched the film, which of the following had the greatest impact on you? Explain. Choose one: 1. Gandhi’s call for equal treatment of Hindu, Muslim, and untouchables. 2. Gandhi’s methods to achieve Indian unity and independence. 3. 7 Create a group timeline.  With your group, choose what you believe are the four most significant dates in South African history.  Create a pictorial representation of each date for your timeline. Every group member must contribute.  Share completed timeline with the class.  Group effort and individual participation will be graded.

8 Assessment  What impact did the Dutch and English colonization of South Africa have on the indigenous people (San and Khoikhoi) during the 17 th century? Use complete sentences (3-4) and the text to support your answer.
