Colour Week 21st – 25th September 2015
Year 5 Sharing Assembly

Food colouring and milk
First we got a paper plate full of milk and we added food colouring. Then we got a cotton bud, dipped it in ‘Fairy Liquid’ and put it on the coloured milk. All of a sudden it EXPLODED! However, if you tried to explode more in the same place, nothing happened. When we blew it, you could see the food colouring under the milk. The reason this happened is because the ‘Fairy Liquid’ breaks the surface tension so it appears to explode.

Filter paper and pens We got some filter paper, pens and a ruler. On the filter paper we drew a 4cm line and then drew a dot on the middle of the line. We waited half an hour before dipping it into a pot of water. We waited for the ink to shoot up and see what colours it was made up of.

Rainbow rhyme Mrs Humphryes told us a rhyme to help us remember the order of the colours of the rainbow. It is: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain

Skittle taste test For the skittles taste test we drew a table in our books and carried out a taste test to find out whether colour affected taste. In our taste test we took it in turns to eat a Skittle and guess what colour it was. We then recorded how often we guessed correctly or incorrectly.

Red cabbage juice In colour week we did a red cabbage juice and liquid experiment with Mrs Humphryes. We used different liquids such as : Vinegar, bleach, lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid and water. We saw that each liquid changed colour!

Mixing primary colours
We were given paint in primary colours (which were red, yellow and blue). We then mixed them with other colours to discover which different colours were created.

Making rainbows In addition to this, in colour week, we made a rainbow with strips of coloured paper to represent the spectrum. We found out that the rainbow colours aren’t the same as the rhyme but: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Fish In colour week we used washing up liquid and vinegar and a cotton bud to decorate fish. The fish were made of filter paper soaked in red cabbage juice. The vinegar colour turned the paper pink and the washing up liquid colour turned the paper green.

Planet collages On Wednesday 23rd, we made planet collages. We made collages of all the planets of the solar system (excluding Pluto and The Sun). We used multi-coloured paper and cut them into squares. Then we stuck them on according to the relevant planet. Finally we wrote in French to describe them.

French song Mercure, Venus, Et la terre, Mars, Mars, Mars, Et Jupiter! Saturne, Uranus, Et Neptune! Pluton, Pluton, N’oublieq pas la lune!

Smarties We did some science experiment with Smarties during colour week. We needed one Smartie, filter paper, a cup and some water. We did this because we were wondering what colours a yellow smartie was made up of. It was made up of yellow because yellow is a primary colour. We put water in a cup. The circular filter paper was cut with a triangle shape which was hanging in the water. After that we put a Smartie on the edge (where the triangle was hanging) of the filter paper and waited for 30 minutes.

Quiz Anna has created a quiz at home to see what you can remember about Colour Week. We hope that you have enjoyed our presentation!
