2 Social Problems of Delinquency and Crime Delinquency and crime are major social problems of modern society Gang violence has become a major problem in the last two decades in cities of all sizes Social workers are playing prominent roles in administrative and practice positions in federal, state, and local correctional programs

3 Correctional Services Social Work and Corrections Throughout history, punishments, especially corporal and capital, have often been offered in answer to antisocial behavior Penitentiary system developed to give offender a change to think, have a ‘change of heart,’ and ‘mend his ways’ through mediation in solitary confinement

4 Social Processes Corrections is one of four social processes utilized in the administration of criminal justice: Law enforcement Prosecution and defense Judicial process Corrections – responsible for administrating the assigned penalties

5 Role of Social Worker Helps the offender change patterns of behavior Work with them to relate constructively to others and become socially acceptable. This is done through two avenues: Working with the individual to help him or her change through better understanding of self and by tapping the person’s own strengths and resources Modification of environment to bring about a more healthy social climate in which to live

6 Social Work Practice in Corrections Settings: Institutional Noninstitutional Social work process consists of four parts: Social study (facts) Assessment (defining and evaluating) Treatment (problem solving) Termination

7 Processes and Principles Direct practice, group work, and community organization Key principles: Utilize a relationship to help clients to help themselves Not condemn or moralize, accept clients as they are, regardless of what has been in the past Respect right of self-determination, assist them to think and feel through their problems and situation Recognize that one has to study and understand normal behavior as well as antisocial behavior Provide a security-giving firmness, not physical punishment Use authority in positive manner/help offenders to help themselves, face their problems and readjust thinking and behavior
