STRESSOR A situation that puts demands on the body/mind. Environmental –Pollution, noise, crowds Biological –Illness, disability, injury Mental challenges Behavioral –Lack of exercise, sleep Life change –Death, marriage, big move Catastrophic Events –Earthquake, fire, hurricane

STRESS The body and mind’s reaction to demands (stressors). Stress can be positive OR negative

TYPES OF STRESS EUSTRESS –Good or positive stress An exam that you did study for Baby Motivates and energizes a person for a task at hand DISTRESS –Bad or negative stress An exam that you did not study for Baby Makes a person feel threatened or overwhelmed

NORMATIVE STRESS Expected things that happen –Start of school –First or new job –Move –Marriage –Children

NON-NORMATIVE STRESS Unexpected events that happen –A serious accident –A major illness –Loss of a loved one –A natural disaster

STRESS ACUTE –Things that happen once in awhile, but the situation doesn’t last CHRONIC –Ongoing situations that are stressful. –Stress over a long period of time is not healthy.

PERSONALITY TYPES TYPE A PERSONALITY –COMPETITIVE –HIGH-ACHIEVING –INTERPRETS THINGS AS THREATENING –INTERPRETS THINGS AS MORE STRESSFUL AND GENERALLY REACTS BY GETTING ANGRY AND YELLING AT OTHERS TYPE B PERSONALITY –NON-COMPETITIVE –“LAID BACK” –TENDS TO KEEP THINGS INSIDE –BY KEEPING THINGS INSIDE THIS INCREASES THEIR STRESS LEVELS BUT OTHERS MAY NOT BE AWARE OF IT RIGHT AWAY

OPTIMIST –THE GLASS IS HALF FULL –PEOPLE WHO EXPECT THAT THE BEST WILL HAPPEN PESSIMIST –THE GLASS IS HALF EMPTY –PEOPLE THAT EXPECT THAT THE WORST WILL HAPPEN

COPE The ability to successfully deal with a stressful situation by making the decisions and life changes that improve a stressful situation in a positive or healthy manner.

C.O.P.E Consider lifestyle alternatives –Physical activity, music, reading Other’s support –Peer groups, friends, family Problem solving –Use DECIDE method Esteem building –Reflect on strengths, set reasonable goals
