1. Accelerate in 2000 Accelerate X12 development & approval process while retaining neutral, open, cross- industry consensus –Minimize time spent on administration –Maximize access to member expertise & experience –Recognize needs of today’s dynamic business environment

Accelerate - Action Items –Revise procedures –Replace time consuming paper-based routing with email, web access, listserves –X12 web site –Electronic Balloting –Email access –Utilize technology to produce broad-based member exchange between face-to-face meetings

2. Expand in 2000 Expand EDI’s scope to incorporate business processes and enhanced electronic exchange –Capture data’s relationship-use & process (data modeling) –Reach SMEs by offering additional data exchange approaches (e.g. XML) that are easily integrated

Expand - Action Items Utilize SITG demo project to establish “next generation” priorities –Clarify role of data modeling –Explore subcommittee & business transaction alignment Establish X12’s role in expanding EDI to incorporate XML –Position X12 users to benefit from XML development –Articulate relationship and uses of X12 and XML

3. Collaborate in 2000 Collaborate with complementary standards initiatives to build integrated global electronic exchange solutions –Contribute business and implementation expertise –Ensure compatibility and integration issues are understood –Available to a broad base of users

Collaborate - Action Items Cooperate with International counter parts & related standards groups to synchronize next generation standards –Participate in UN/CEFACT (TMWG, EWG, etc.) –Interact with OMG, W3C, etc. Actively participate in the ebXML initiative –Share E business integration & implementation expertise –Endorse the objective of one XML framework

X12’s Endorsement of ebXML The ASC X12 is anxious to participate in this exciting ebXML initiative. Technology is evolving rapidly and the EDI community realizes the potential and momentum that XML offers businesses integrating electronic commerce solutions. At the same time, the XML community has acknowledged the need for interoperability and rich semantics within the EDI standards. By bringing together the best from each of these two communities, the resource pool to achieve our electronic business goals will increase by exponential orders of magnitude resulting in lower cost electronic Business to Business solutions for the SME.
