3 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG Why Electronics in the Tunnel? u Studies Conclude to Low Radiation Levels u Electronics Closer to Sensors Lower Noise, Higher Bandwidth New Data Pre-Processing Methods Less Cables to Alcoves, UAs & USs Better Remote Diagnostics u Limitation More Activated Material No Access Possible During Operation with Beam

4 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG Objectives of the Radiation Tests u Qualify COTS Electronics for LHC Tunnel ( COTS - Commercial Off The Shelf) u Validation of Complete Systems u Identify Radiation Sensitive Components u Replacement with Radiation Hardened Items u Improve Global Radiation Hardness u Evaluate Equipment Life-Time with Radiation

5 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG Radiation Doses u References: - LHC Project Note 18, CERN/TIS-RP/IR/95-16 - LHC Project Note 109, L. Coull, R. Schmidt, T. Spickermann, 26/09/1997 - LHC Engineering Specification, 08/04/1999 Current Reference Table

6 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG 1998 - Irradiation Campaign u SPS North Experimental Area (TCC2)* u Static COTS Electronics (Not Powered)* u Access to Equip. during SPS MDs only u 3 Irradiation Campaigns 1) - 14 Days: Dose 20 Gy, Fluence 2.10 11 N/cm 2 2) - 20 Days: 50 Gy, 5.10 11 N/cm 2 3) - 45 Days: 140 Gy, 1,1.10 12 N/cm 2 (Dosimetry & Radio-Protection by TIS Division)

7 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG Practical Difficulty u COTS Equip. Must be Analyzed and Improved by the Manufacturer u Manufacturer's Authorization (National Rules) u Transport of Irradiated Equipment u No Success Yet! u Proposal: Manufacturer's Experts should Come to CERN Analysis should be Done at CERN

8 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG On-Line Radiation Test Facility u Infrastructure in TCC2 10 m 2 Test-Area (Shelfs & Work Benches) Local Radiation Monitors Coaxial & Twisted Pair Cables Mono & Multimode Optical Fibers Electrical Power & Compressed Air u Local Control Room in BA80* Accelerator & Office LAN Connections Space for Workstations & Instruments On-Line Monitoring of Radiation Doses

9 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG 1999 On-Line Test Program u 16 Experiments Now Installed & Taking Data u 2 More Foreseen Next June u New Ones Being Proposed u Duration & Doses to be Specified Related to the Radiation Level at its Tunnel Location “ its Position Relative to Magnets Type of Equipment Required Lifetime

10 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG Dosimetry & Five Experiments u Radiation & Dosimetry (M. Tavlet, TIS/TE) u Digital Positioners (W. Hees, LHC/ACR) u Quench Protection (R. Denz, LHC/ICP) u Signal Conditioners (P. Gomes, LHC/ACR) u CAN Fieldbus (B. Hallgren, ATLAS) u PLCs & Fieldbuses (J. Brahy, LHC/IAS)

11 LHC Project Seminar - 06/05/99Raymond RAUSCH - SLRAD-WG Conclusions u The CERN On-Line Radiation Test Facility is a Permanent Installation u It Offers Remote Control Capabilities (from your Office!) u It Can be Improved/Modified/Adapted to New Needs u The Radiation Environment is Similar to that of LHC u Electronic Components, Equipment & Systems Can be Qualified for LHC Operation.
