2. Catholics believe that at the Last Supper, what Jesus gave to his disciples really was his body and blood, and he asks us today, to eat it as well. The Eucharist (means “thanksgiving” in Greek) is the real body and blood of Jesus. The Eucharist is also sometimes called the Real Presence: Jesus is REALLY present in the form of bread and wine. 1.What is the Real Presence? 4. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest prays over the bread and wine. He asks God that by the power of the Holy Spirit, he bread and wine may become for us the body and blood of Christ. Just like the Holy Spirit came over Mary, and made Jesus into flesh in Mary’s womb – so at mass Jesus is made present in his flesh, in the bread and wine. This is called trans-substantiation (a change in substance. You can’t see the change – bread/ wine still look like bread/ wine, but really they are Jesus body/ blood. 1.Draw 3 boxes to show Mary, the holy spirit over Mary, and Jesus in Mary’s womb. Call it “INCARNATION”. 2.Explain how the incarnation happened. 3.Draw another 3 boxes to show the priest with the bread & wine, the Holy Spirit over the bread & wine, and Jesus in the bread & wine. Call it “TRANSUBSTANTIATION”. 4.Explain how transubstantiation happens 5.Write a definition of what trans- substantiation means. ***Can you think of that “changes substance” but doesn’t change appearance? Trans-substantiation is when the bread and the wine changes to become Jesus really present. You cannot see the change, but through the Holy Spirit it has changed to become Jesus really present.

5. ADORATION: Why do Catholics do it? 1.Explain why Catholics spend time praying or sitting in silence in front of the Blessed Sacrament, during Adoration. 2.Draw a Monstrance on the altar.
