What can We do About Global Warming? By: Darlene Tesseyman Samantha Thomas Olga Khizver
2
What is Global Warming? Global Warming is the increase in Earth’s average temperature that occurs because of greenhouse gases.
3
What causes Global Warming? Global warming is caused from fossil fuels which are greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide, and fluorocarbons. These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere, and when the sunlight strikes the earth’s surface it is reflected back towards space as heat. This entrapment of heat is called the greenhouse effect.
4
How do our communities contribute to this problem? We use and do harmful things that emit harmful gases into the air that deplete the ozone layer such as: Hair spray Air conditioners We burn coal to generate electricity Cars We can also recycle: Paper Metal And Other nonrenewable, recyclable products
5
How much does the ordinary population know about it? Ordinary people know very little about global warming- basically what the news tells you. However, it goes much deeper than that. Most people don’t think about the future of our planet Earth and how global warming is depletes the ozone layer.
6
What types of green gases are frequent/abundant/common in our community? Examples of greenhouse gases in our community are: –Carbon dioxide –Methane –Nitrous oxide
7
How much do we know about the Kyoto Protocol? The Kyoto Protocol agreed on by governments at a United Nations Conference in Kyoto, Japan. It was signed to reduce the amount of greenhouses gases emitted by developed countries. However the United States did not sign this agreement.
8
What can we do to participate in the solution? To help reduce global warming you can: Use solar panels Stop using cars that emit harmful gases into the Earth’s atmosphere Help put more carbon on Earth by planting more trees and help preserve the ones we already have
