STI fact sheet A majority of certain STI’s are contracted in the city of Milwaukee There is a huge jump in STI cases after the age of 14 Almost all cases of reported Gonorrhea in Milw. Co. are in the City of Milwaukee There are more than 3 times the cases of Chlamydia than Gonorrhea 75% of men and 50% of women with Chlamydia have no symptoms (asymptomatic)

Chlamydia Most frequently reported STD in the United States

Chlamydia Transmission –Oral sex –Anal sex –Vaginal sex Symptoms –“silent disease” –Often no symptoms –Women- vaginal discharge, burning sensation when urinating

Chlamydia Treatment –Antibiotics –All sex partners should be tested and treated –Abstain from sex during treatment –Re-test three months after treatment

Chlamydia Prevention –Abstinence –Monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected –Make sure partner is tested –Condoms

Gonorrhea Very common STD

Gonorrhea Transmission –Contact with the penis, vagina, mouth or anus Symptoms –May not have symptoms (asymptomatic) –Burning while urinating, white, yellow, or green discharge, painful or swollen testicles

Gonorrhea Treatment –Antibiotics –Some drug-resistant strains are increasing in areas of the world –All sex partners should be tested and treated –Abstain from sex during treatment

Syphilis –Called “the great imitator”

Syphilis Transmission –Direct contact with a syphilis sore –Sores occur mainly on the external genitals, vagina, anus, or in the rectum, can also occur on the lips and in the mouth Symptoms –May not have symptoms for years

Syphilis Treatment –Easy to cure in early stages –Antibiotic –All sex partners should be tested and treated –Abstain from sex during treatment

Herpes Common disease, not curable

Herpes Transmission –Occurs during sexual contact –Oral - genital contact, or genital - genital contact –Can be transmitted by contact with or without a sore Symptoms –Outbreak, flu-like symptoms, recurrent painful genital sores

Herpes Treatment –No treatment that can cure herpes –Antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks

HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus - damages the immune system, can lead to AIDS

HIV Transmission –Through contact with infected body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk –Through sexual contact, sharing needles, or sharing syringes, sharing razors, sharing toothbrushes –NOT transmitted by shaking hands, social kissing, coughing, sneezing, swimming, bathrooms, or eating utensils

HIV Symptoms –Flu-like symptoms –Some symptoms do not show for years –Immune system weakens

HIV Treatment –Persons infected will remain contagious for their entire life –Several antiviral medications to slow progression

HIV Prevention –Abstinence –Monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected –Make sure partner is tested –Condoms –DO NOT share needles –Use clean needles

Can be spread from mother to baby Any genital symptoms such as unusual sore, discharge with odor, burning during urination, bleeding between menstrual cycles could mean an infection Stop having sex and consult a health care provider immediately GET TESTED!
