2  The shoemaking business was introduced in 1610.  It first came to Jamestown.  Shoemaking became very popular by 1616.  There is still a Shoemaker’s shop in Williamsburg today.

3  Baskets were very important in Colonial America.  Basket making was more of an activity than a business.  Baskets were used a lot by every family.  To make baskets, you needed nimble fingers and took more skill than strength.  Men, women, and children made baskets.

4  These are some tools needed to be a blacksmith:  forge  anvil  hammer  tongs  vise  file  Blacksmiths made tools and things out of steel to do work.  They also made household items.

5 There are different types of slaves:  Domestic Slaves  Plantation Slaves  Household Slaves, and  Slaves that were cooks Gaby Burwell:  Gaby Burwell was a plantation slave that was a runaway and was more valued dead than alive. He belonged to James Burwell. He was outlawed and rewards were placed for his head.

6 There were lots of different tools:  Augers were used for drilling holes.  Chisels were used to shape things.  Gouges were used for shallow cuts.  There were compasses to make precise measurements.  There were knives to cut, obviously.  And hammers to hammer things in to other things like nails into wood.  Planes were chisel-like blades.  Squares and Bevels were used to measure angles and make sure they were correct.

7  Women had to wear dresses with shifts, stays, hooped petticoats, stomacher to cover the stomach, the gown, lace neck kerchief, and a lace apron. They also had to wear hats.  Men had to wear suits with a shirt, silk cravat, waist coat, coat, and breeches. They also had to wear hats.

8  Married Lord Dunmore in 1759.  Was loved for her lady-like grace and charm.  Had nine children.
