Mitigation of Urban Heat Island Effect via NeighborWoods Tree Program- Austin, Texas Project Manager-Clancy Taylor GIS Analyst/Web Designer-Will Johnston GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst-Michael Amaral GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst-Megan Branam

Introduction Austin, Texas NeighborWoods Tree Planting Program Mitigation of Urban Heat Island Effect Effectiveness of Program 2

Data City of Austin USGS images from Landsat 4-5, 7, and 8. CAPCOG NeighborWoods tree locations 3

Methodology-ERDAS Imagery collected during summer season. Focus on band 6, the thermal band. Re-project images into the proper projection. Resample pixel sizes of images into the same pixel size. Convert the digital numbers (DN) into surface temperature values. Export the Imagine file into a raster file for ArcGIS. 4

Methodology-ArcGIS Group tree-planting years together Use NDVI function to locate where areas of vegetation / urban areas are Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Can be used to account for changes in land use Visual analysis 5

Methodology-Statistical Analysis Understanding of surface temperatures in Austin 2002-2014 Has NeighborWoods had an effect on the surface temperatures? 6

Expected Results Recommendations for similar, future studies. Estimated energy savings provided by NeighborWood trees. Surface temperature changes effected by NeighborWood trees. 7

Timeline Phase 1-Data Collection and Processing Phase 2- Data Analysis Phase 3-Web and Map Development Phase 4-Data Interpretation and Quality Control 8

Budget 9

Conclusion Mitigation of UHI via NeighborWoods trees Analysis of energy savings and surface temperature Reproducible study 10
