Birth to 1714 Née: 1 Novembre, 1694 as François Marie Arouet 1701: Mother dies 1704: enters Le Lycée de Louis le Grand 1711: leaves school to study law 1713: sent to Holland 1714:sent to the Marquis de Saint-Ange

1714 - 1732 1716 Exiled to Tulle and Sully. 1717 Sent to Bastille, where he writes the Henriade. - The Henriade was an epic poem and spoke of the political state of France. 1726 Exiled to England. 1729 Voltaire returns from exile.

1733 - 1753 Relationship with the marquise du Chatelet – relates to Candide and Cunegonde. Studies at the Château de Cirey: -Metaphysics -Leibniz -Newton -Bible After 15 years at the Château, Voltaire returns to Paris. He publishes a few works, and becomes the philosopher-poet to Frederick the Great. However they quarrel and Voltaire leaves.

1754 - Death 1754: lives on the border of France, then moves to Geneva 1759: publishes Candide and moves to Ferney Treatise On Tolerance Dictionnaire Philosophique 1778: returns to Paris to a hero’s welcome, and dies shortly after
