Today’s Activity Dry Ice & Water

Dry Ice - Safety First Do not touch dry ice with your bare hands. It’s cooled to -104 degrees and will give you frost bite. Do not put dry ice in your mouth. It will give you very bad ice burns on any surface it touches. Do not put your face in or near the vapors. They will make you cough and will hurt your throat.

Today’s Experiments Theme: Fun With Dry Ice Experiments will be performed by Instructor only, except where noted Experiment 1: Dry Ice vs “Wet” Ice – What happens when they melt? Experiment 1a: Dry Ice Racing – Lay out a cookie pan. Fill half way with water. Put a few small pellets of Dry Ice in and watch them race around as they sublimate. Experiment 2: Dry Ice In Water – Spooky fog Experiment 3: Dry Ice and a Quarter – What happens when we put them together? Experiment 4: Dry Ice Cannon – Making smoke rings using dry ice, a red solo cup, a little bit of water, and some saran wrap. Experiment 5: Dry Ice and Milk – What happens to the milk when we add dry ice? Experiment 6: Dry Ice, Soap, & Water – (Interactive with kids at main table) When mixed, the evaporation of the Carbon Dioxide gas gets caught in the bubbles of the soap. The kids can touch the bubbles without risk. For this, a deep vase will be used so the kids cannot touch the dry ice directly. Experiment 7: Dry Ice Painting – Using the results of Experiment 6, drop food coloring onto the bubbles and then place a piece of paper on top. This may or may not be interactive, depending on how calm the students are.
