4. The Dutch Found New Netherland
A Diverse Colony:
New Amsterdam (New York) was capital of Dutch colony New Netherlands
Established to continue lucrative fur trading business
More interested in trading with Natives then fighting them
1660’s Dutch open colony to many diff. European settlers

5. The English Take Over King Charles II saw New Netherland as a “wedge”
1664 granted his brother the Duke of York to drive out the Dutch
He arrives and the Dutch surrender without a single shot being fired
Duke renames the colony New York and gives a piece to his friends
They name their new colony New Jersey

7. The Quakers Settle Pennsylvania
Penn’s - Holy Experiment
Quaker harassed by Anglicans and Puritans for passive life-style
Held informal services and allow anyone to speak
Establishes PA with religious freedom and no land owning aristocracy
Est. capital “City of Brotherly Love” or…..Philadelphia

Soon a growing desire for independence would put a strain on their relationship with England
