Shell Exploration & Production Shell - POSC Activities 2005
2
Focus Contribute to Industry Standards Encourage Industry Sharing Foster takeup of Industry Standards Benefit from Industry Standards
3
Main Activities 2005 Release of Standards to POSC –Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) Primer –Shell Standard Legend 2002 Work Areas –Coordinate Reference in WITSML –Letter of Intent for release of Well Header data (GUWI) –Practical Well Log Standards (PWLS) –PRODML Quarterly Progress Meetings

Shell Exploration & Production POSC DTS Standards in Shell Martijn Hooimeijer Linda Dodge
6
Why Shell Contributes Fits into Shell Data Architecture Standards Data handling and processing independent of DTS hardware vendors allows global standards, reduces interfaces Standard interfaces facilitate usage of best in class visualisation, interpretation and monitoring tools POSC DTS Standards in Shell
7
What Shell has contributed Shell DTS Primer (a foundational document for the WITSML DTS definition) Integration expertise DTS Expertise Stimulating vendors to implement and comply with WITSML DTS POSC DTS Standards in Shell
8
Office Domain Distributed Data DB XML ? XML (?) Client Software Envisioned DTS Architecture POSC DTS Standards in Shell Process Control Domain Storage required for 72 hours Data to be sent in POSC DTS ML Exchange format. Temporary Storage DTS Hardware XML / OPC Transfer raw data: (unscaled) Stokes / anti-Stokes data Transfer temperature traces Transfer other distributed data Flexible header that may include parameters relating to Light box, Fiber, and Well details. Transfer installation / hardware configuration (either as an “extended” header of regular message, or as separate message, with preference for the prior).
9
Shell’s plans An DTS data handling architecture has been designed around the WITSML DTS, including Oracle DTS Database First application using WITSML DTS due to be up and running in Q4 this year: will probably generate change requests Continue working with all our DTS vendors to have their devices export WITSML DTS POSC DTS Standards in Shell

Usage in POSC Lithological vocabulary in the mudlog and sidewall core objects of WITSML 1.3.1 is derived from SSL. Shell Standard Legend 2002

Usage in Shell Shell Standard Legend 2002 Global Mapping Standards Arc GIS DB Openwork s Other DBs Ongoing Implemente d In progress To be done Global Focus
13
Aspiration Shell Standard Legend 2002 Vendor Tool 1 Vendor Tool 2 etc..etc.. - Industry take up - Adoption by vendors - Embedding in tools Standardization within EP companies becomes unnecessary or minimal

Curve Naming Standards in Shell Presenting To POSC SIG 6/2004 Collating Existing Documents 8/2003 Creating Virtual Team (Domain Experts & Data Managers) 9/2003 Endorsed by Discipline Leadership Team 3/2004 Discussing PWLS Change Request with POSC 12/2004 Joined Curves Calculated / Interpreted Curves Internal: Implementing External....
16
Shell Curve Naming Standards vs. PWLS V2.0 Joined & Calculated Curves SIMILARITIES: Most maps comfortably DIFFERENCES: Terminology: –DT vs. AC Granularity: –PWLS V2 Porosity does not have classes Net or Net Effective –HC Saturation does not have any subclass –Water Saturation does not have any subclass except Flushed Zone –Resistivity Depths of Investigation does not differentiate Shallow and Micro Scope: –PWLS does not cover RFT pressures, TVD, FLD, LITH, Cased Hole, etc. –Shell does not cover Minerals, Drilling Bit Size, etc. Flexibility: –Shell allows local specific for Volume Fractions –Shell allows interpretation method as the suffix for all Calculated Curves
17
Change Requests and Results 1.Acoustic: –Add Stoneley Slowness curve – Accepted –Replace AC with DT – Not Accepted 2.Resistivity: –Differentiate Shallow and Micro – Accepted 3.Permeability: –Replace LPERM with PERM – Accepted 4.Porosity: –Remove Total Porosity. Use generic Porosity instead – Not Accepted –Add Effective, Net Effective – Accepted 5.HC Saturation: –Add Net, Effective, Effective Net, and Flushed Zone – Accepted 6.Water Saturation: –Add Net, Effective, and Effective Net - Accepted

PWLS V2.0 – Use in Shell Petris is working on implementing PWLS v2.0 standard for Raw Curves in Recall by Shell’s request; –Plan to implement PWLS v2.0 for Raw Curves Names in Recall Standard Data Dictionaries –Shell Global Standard on Joined and Calculated Curves implemented in Global Recall Data Dictionaries; Deviations to PWLS V2.0 need to be revisited Shell is working on: –How and to what extend to use PWLS V2.0 (Raw Curves) Property Types Attributes –Mapping between: TechLog Curve Family Recall Curve Types PWLS Property Types –Targeting to find alignment by end of year
