2 Introduction to Romanticism intellectual orientation that characterized many works of literature painting, music, architecture, criticism and historiography in the Western Civilization over a period from the late 18 th to the mid 19 th century emphasized the individual, the subjective, the irrational, the imaginative, the personal, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the transcendental Romanticism is a rejection of: Classicism 18 th century Neoclassicism Enlightenment 18 th century Rationalism Physical materialism

3 German Romanticism the dominant cultural movement of much of the nineteenth century notable for valuing humor and wit as well as beauty its aesthetic theory seems very different in favoring fragmentation and incompleteness, rather than only perfection and unity
