1 Monday – April 28, 2014 Mr. Lombardi Do Now: Theocracy - a government controlled by religious leaders. How would your life be different if you lived in a theocracy? Explain your answer. Aim: How did Protestantism grow/expand during the Reformation?

2 Handout: Persuading People to Come to Geneva – Create an advertisement persuading people to come to Geneva. – Follow all directions on the handout (both sides). – Due: Tomorrow, April 29 – Thursday, May 1: Unit 7 Assessment: Can be either a multiple choice test, thematic essay, or vocabulary + Aim/Summary quiz. H.W. #5

3 The Reformation so far… 1.The Catholic Church was corrupt. 2.Martin Luther opposed the Catholic Church. 3.Martin Luther’s 95 Theses was printed and distributed throughout Europe. 4.Protestant churches are created (ex: Lutheran, the Church of England, and Anglican). 5.Elizabeth I creates the Anglican Church in England to please both, Catholics and Protestants (a compromise). 6.** The Reformation breaks up the religious unity of Europe. **

4 The Reformation Continues… Even though Queen Elizabeth I created a new Protestant church called the Anglican Church, it remained similar to the Catholic Church in many of its practices. However, other forms of Protestantism were rising in other places. In Switzerland, John Calvin created unique ideas about the relationship between people and God and used his religious teachings to rule the area as a theocracy. How would your life be different if you lived in a theocracy?

5 Activity Read the handout, Calvin Continues the Reformation with a partner. – Highlight/underline important parts as you read. – Complete the vocabulary in your own words. – Answer the question. – Complete the graphic organizer.
