The Founding Fathers wanted to form a government that did not allow one person to control the country. Think about how England was treating the colonist…

The Constitution created a government with three separate branches, each with its own distinct powers.

Each branch has its own responsibilities This separation was implemented to make sure no single branch had too much power.

Lets look at the Three Branches of Government.

Branch 1 – The Legislative Branch. This Branch is located in the United States Capital Building in Washington D.C.

The Legislative Branch or Congress of government has the authority to make laws for the nation.

Congress is split into two different sections…the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Congress’s primary duty is to write, debate, and pass bills or laws which are then passed on to the President for approval.

Makes laws controlling trade between states and between the United States and other countries.

Makes laws about taxes and borrowing money.

Approves the making of money (special coins).

Can declare war on other countries.
