4. When you are at the Chaffey Library You will need to have 5 areas ready to research and prepare your note/source cards. Also, look for your map. Go to the computer and search for information about your topic If the book has a number, it is a nonfiction book that you may check out. If it has an “R” on the call #, then it is only for you to use in the library. You may not check these out.

5. Research Tips When you are at the aisle where your book is located, look around…you might find other books that pertain to your subject! Nonfiction books have the same call numbers as reference books. Example: If you found Civil War books in R973.7 (reference section), then the same types of books will be found in the nonfiction area. Be patient! This will take time…

8. When you have found books for your project You will keep the information that you find about your books and websites on SOURCE CARDS. You will then write down information from the text on NOTECARDS

13. Secondary Sources Secondary sources are accounts written after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. They are interpretations and evaluations of primary sources. Secondary sources are not evidence, but rather commentary on and discussion of evidence. They are usually published by scholars and professors in academic publications and books. Example: Primary: Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address Secondary: A written analysis of the meanings in the speech written by a Professor at USC
