Library Information Research Tools: 1.Nonfiction Books 2.Reference Books 3.Internet: websites, online databases, student resource center

When you are at the Chaffey Library You will need to have 5 areas ready to research and prepare your note/source cards. Also, look for your map. Go to the computer and search for information about your topic If the book has a number, it is a nonfiction book that you may check out. If it has an “R” on the call #, then it is only for you to use in the library. You may not check these out.

Research Tips When you are at the aisle where your book is located, look around…you might find other books that pertain to your subject! Nonfiction books have the same call numbers as reference books. Example: If you found Civil War books in R973.7 (reference section), then the same types of books will be found in the nonfiction area. Be patient! This will take time…

Dewey Decimal System 000 General Knowledge 100 philosophy and psychology 200 religion 300 social sciences 400 language and grammar 500 natural sciences and math 600 medicine and technology 700 arts and recreation 800 literature 900 geography and history

Oh yeah… You will also need SOURCE/NOTE CARDS (20 of them even though you may not use them all in your paper) You should go buy a pack of cards his week as your first five note/source cards are due 11-10-08 and… A works cited page

When you have found books for your project You will keep the information that you find about your books and websites on SOURCE CARDS. You will then write down information from the text on NOTECARDS

Cool Web Site About Source Cards http://www.crlsresearchguide.org/04_Maki ng_Source_Cards.asphttp://www.crlsresearchguide.org/04_Maki ng_Source_Cards.asp Also…refer to the handouts given in class. Don’t LOSE them!

Source Cards You need 3x5 cards You use them to document which online sources you might use for your project Example:

Note Cards Use 4x6 or 5x7 cards only (for information) You write down direct quotes or paraphrase your information from your source. Example:

Types of Sources Primary, Secondary, Tertiary PRIMARY Also called “firsthand” documents They include ORIGINAL writing or records Example: Diaries Interviews (legal proceedings, personal, telephone, e-mail) Letters Original Documents (i.e. birth certificate or a trial transcript) Patents Photographs Proceedings of Meetings, Conferences and Symposia. Survey Research (such as market surveys and public opinion polls) Works of Literature TWO of your sources must be primary

Secondary Sources Secondary sources are accounts written after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. They are interpretations and evaluations of primary sources. Secondary sources are not evidence, but rather commentary on and discussion of evidence. They are usually published by scholars and professors in academic publications and books. Example: Primary: Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address Secondary: A written analysis of the meanings in the speech written by a Professor at USC

Tertiary Sources Tertiary sources consist of information which is a distillation and collection of primary and secondary sources. Almanacs Encyclopedias Fact books

The Internet Be very wary because much of what you read can be false and not credible Always look for the author…is there one? What is a URL? (Uniform Resource Locator) Type of organization: com—commercial enterprise edu—educational institution gov—US government entity mil—US military entity net—network access provider (anyone) org—nonprofit organization

Internet Search Engines Individual Search Engines: www.altavista.com www.alltheweb.com www.google.com Metasearch operators: www.metacrawler.com www.ixquick.com www.dogpile.com
