A method of gathering info using surveys Surveys --A research technique for acquiring data about people’s attitudes and behaviors Involves asking questions In person Through questionnaires What are some potential problems with the accuracy of surveys?

Dishonesty Not wanting to divulge personal information Giving only partially true answers Telling researchers “what they want to hear” Targeting the wrong group Survey must represent the target population – the whole group that you want to study or describe Bias – predisposition to a certain point of view Volunteer Bias -- people who volunteer to participate in surveys have a different outlook from people who do not volunteer Willingness to be open More interested in research

Sample -- Targeting a small group (or sample) of a given population Random Sample – individuals selected by chance from a population group Stratisfied Sample – drafting a sample so that subgroups are proportionately represented Large enough samples will be naturally proportionate

Results of a survey CANNOT be generalized if the survey does not represent the target population. Ex. Longer school day survey (senior elective class vs. sophomore biology class)
