Objective: To be able to describe cellular respiration, lactic acid and alcohol fermentation.
2
To be able to describe cellular respiration. Cellular Respiration 6O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + energy Releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules when oxygen is present.
3
To be able to describe cellular respiration. Glycolysis Process when glucose is broken in half to produce 2 molecules of pyruvic acid (3 Carbon molecules)
4
To be able to describe cellular respiration. ATP has to invest 2 ATP in the beginning gets 4 back at the end net gain= 2 ATP
5
To be able to describe cellular respiration. NADH During glycolysis 4 high-energy electrons are passed to a carrier called NAD+ this is converted into NADH Glycolysis does not require oxygen!!
6
To be able to describe fermentation. Fermentation- No Oxygen (anaerobic) releases energy from food molecules w/o oxygen Two Types: Alcoholic Fermentation and Lactic Acid Fermentation
7
To be able to describe alcohol fermentation. Alcoholic Fermentation- pyruvic acid + NADH alcohol +CO 2 + NAD + Causes bread to rise
8
To be able to describe lactic acid fermentation. Lactic Acid Fermentation- pyruvic acid converted to lactic acid and regenerates NAD + pyruvic acid+ NADH lactic acid + NAD + sore muscles when exercise and not enough O 2 is available burning sensation
