Study Strategies… Make Flashcards Make up a little story for each word Draw a picture for each word that has to do with the meaning Do on-line quizzes multiple times (use the “reverse” quizzes and definitions as well) Study on multiple nights

Vocab Strategy #1 Look at Word Endings The endings of words tell you the word’s part of speech. Match it to a word that is the same part of speech. Verbs: -ate -ize Nouns: -ac -an -ment -ist -ism Adjectives: -ic -ous -ible/-able Adverbs: -ly

Vocabulary Strategy #2 Ask yourself if you know any words which sound similar to the one you need to know. The English Language is made up of word families, therefore associations- connections you can make between words will help you discover meanings.

Vocab Strategy 3 Chunk it up… This is taking off from strategy three. Break the words into its roots and write down the meanings of those roots. Misanthrope Mis(o) –anthro –(ope) HateMan Someone who is Do the bottom of the Roots quizzes first and use this info to help you on the top.

Synonyms section… Use context clues if you don’t know the meaning of one of the synonyms. This is turning the “synonyms” into a fill in the blank. Use roots and endings to help you… Do the definitions first. This will leave you with only 10 words to place for the synonyms
