What is matter??? What do you think? How would you describe matter? Definition: Matter is the “stuff” that makes up everything Anything with a mass and volume can be considered matter
3
Is it Matter??? Oxygen Sheetrock Calculator Love Chapstick Happiness Ms. Lasee Alaska
4
Types of Matter Mixtures: definition: consists of two or more substances that are mixed together Examples: Juice, salt water, soda A salad (lots of different parts)
5
Mixtures Continued… 1. substances keep their separate properties (Can separate the substances from one another after they have been mixed) 2. Are classified by how well they are mixed:
6
Types of Mixtures: Salt water (mixed very well, looks like a single substance) Solution or Homogeneous mixture - “best mixed” of all possible mixtures (cannot tell the two substances apart) Oil and water (does not blend so well) Heterogeneous mixture- can see all the separate substances present in the mixture
7
Pure Substances Definition: Made up of only ONE kind of matter Ex: sugar, salt, iron, aluminum, copper Pure Substances will ALWAYS have the same properties!! Ex: water will always be water, no matter what it is mixed with
8
Elements Definition: Pure substances that cannot be broken down There are about 100 elements (look on the periodic table)
9
Compounds Definition: A pure substance formed from two or more elements Substances cannot be separated easily Do not get this confused with a mixture!! In a mixture, the substances can ALWAYS BE SEPARATED!!!
10
More on Compounds Ex: water (H20) Another way to look at it… It’s like baking a cake- one the ingredients are mixed together, cannot separate the eggs from the flour, sugar, etc…
