5. CBD Scope of the study  National reporting:  National biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan  First and second National Reports  Thematic reports  Most of the countries recognize the need to involve the private sector in biological diversity initiatives and plan to improve its involvement.

6. CBD Scope of the study (2 nd part)  National Reports (NR) can provide an effective assessment of Private Sector involvement, bearing in mind the following limits:  Not all the Parties have submitted the NR;  NR are not exhaustive;  The assessments are made by the Parties themselves;  What is intended by “private sector”?

CBD Consultative role of private sector  One of the most commonly identified private sector involvement is its consultative role:  Involvement of private sector on National Report activities;  Private sector representatives are members of special panels, committees, forums and workshops;  Decision making at regional, national and local level.

CBD Consultative role of private sector: an example  “Therefore, after a period of consultation, the State Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection Programme of the Czech Republic was prepared, involving a broad spectrum of experts from the state administration, research institutes, universities, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.” (National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan – Czech Republic)

CBD Article 8 – In situ Conservation  Private sector is frequently involved in the creation and the management of protected areas.  The tourism industry and sometimes research entities are providing financial assistance and human resources in exchange for access to the parks.  NGOs are often administering trust fund created for the maintenance of the National Parks.

CBD Article 8 – In situ Conservation: an example  Collaborative Management (CM) – Malawi  “The concept entails sharing rights and responsibilities in the management of natural resources by different stakeholders - rural communities, Government, NGOs, the private sector, etc..” Second National report – Malawi

11. CBD Article 9 – Ex-situ Conservation  PS is involved in the establishment and maintenance of gene banks  Breeding initiatives in ex-situ environment, both by NGOs and PS  PS and NGOs are involved in the activities of private and/or public zoos, botanic gardens, arboretums and tourist farms.

14. CBD Article 13: public education and awareness  There is very little information about PS and article 13.  The main target for the involvement of the PS in the implementation of article 13 are the private media corporations, but the response is weak.

CBD Article 21: Financial mechanism  NGOs and private sector contribution to co- financing on biodiversity projects is 8% of 2,1 billions (estimations, OPS2).  OPS2 assesses that: « the potential for drawing on private sector support for biodiversity conservation initiatives remains largely untapped ».

CBD Summary  According to the information given by the parties in national reports, the private sector is:  Playing an important consultative role at regional, national and local level;  Sporadically helping in the implementation of articles 8, 9 and 11;  Not involved enough for the implementation of articles 13 and 20.
