3. Location The Forest of Dean is in the western part of the county Gloucestershire. It is one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England and was reserved for royal hunting before 1066.

10. Legends “Who killed the bears” On April 26 th 1889, four French men and their 2 bears were making their way back from performing in Cinderford. When they were attacked by an angry mob, enraged by claims that the bears had killed a child and attacked a woman. The bears were killed and the French men were beaten. However, the bears had not killed or attacked anyone and a week later 13 people from Ruardean were charged with ill-treating and killing the bears and assaulting the French men. All but 2 were found guilty and a total of £85 was paid in fines. The term “who killed the bears” existed for many years as an insult, directed to the Ruardean people.
