The most promising database technology - Multimedia Databases Ruoyun Gao Liang Wang Xiaofei Chao
2
General trend Relational Databases (Tables, limited data types-int,long,string) Object-Relational Databases (Can Define ADTs;Falls short of dealing with very large collections of multimedia objects) Multimedia Databases ( Handle individual objects of very large size efficiently; Specify selection conditions based on the contents of multimedia objects )
3
Challenge Managing Repositories of Large Objects: Compression techniques must be carefully integrated into the database environment. Content-Based Retrieval: Although lots of efforts has been made, the accuracy still remains a difficult problem.
4
Example1- NASA’s EOS Project Earth Observing System (EOS) is a program of NASA, which aims to create a repository of satellite imagery. It was designed for long-term global observations of the land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans of the Earth. How it works? (EOS database collects and comprise images from a series of artificial satellite and scientific instruments in Earth orbit. Then EOS analyzes the images and predict the possible natural catastrophes) We are being benefited by EOS. (Weather forecasting, Climate Changes) Image source http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov

Example2- Human Genome Project Databases have been created to store genetic information such as GenBank. Databases store huge amount of images of genetic 3D Structures and models. Scientists query and compare images in the databases. Image source http://www.csm.ornl.gov/SC98/genomics.html
6
Aiming to put entire libraries into database systems and make them accessible through computer networks. Many images, videos as well as animations are stored. Requiring multimedia database management. Example3- NSF/DARPA/NASA Digital Libraries Project Webpage shot of http://www.nsf.gov/
7
Why focus on Content-based MIR? We want to find images of airplanes in the National Science Foundation database We want to find audios we are interested We want to find videos of an interview with James Cameron discussing the making of the Titanic film. James Cameron? Discussing Titanic?
