3 Definition of Rotary What is a Rotary club? “Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.”

4 Object of Rotary… “to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise.” The application of each ideal of service in one’s personal, business and community life will help build the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship united in these ideal of service.

5 A Bit of History  First Rotary club meeting – February 23, 1905 in Chicago started by Paul Harris, however, he was not the first club President. That honor went to club member Silvester Schiele.  By 1910 there were 16 Rotary Clubs  By 1912 the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs due to clubs in Canada, England, Ireland and Scotland.  In 1922 the name was changed to Rotary International.  Paul Harris became the first President of the association of clubs, or Rotary International.  Women were finally allowed to join in 1989.

6 The 4 Way Test  Created in 1932 by Rotarian Herb Taylor who created it to change the culture and save the struggling Club Aluminum Company.  Herb drew this up for all employees to apply in all their personal and business lives.  The company’s survival was attributed to this test.  Adopted by Rotary in 1943 and translated into over 100 languages  Herb served as President of Rotary International in 1954-55

8 Programs  Interact – A Rotary Sponsored service club for young high school leaders ages 12 - 18  Roteract – A Rotary sponsored service club for young leaders ages 18 – 34  Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) – High School student exchange program that changes lives  Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) – A high caliber leadership camp targeted to student leaders in grades 10 and 11
