6.  President Habyarimana: A Hutu, he wanted a transition government with the Rwandese Patriotic Front (RPF)  Decades of tension between Hutu and Tutsi  Tutsis were favored by Belgium  April 1994- President Habyarimana was assassinated  Genocide is encouraged by the government and propaganda  800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus killed  Lasted only 100 days  No help from outside countries The US didn’t help because of previous experiences in Africa. 8.  The Cambodian Genocide was carried out by the Khmer Rouge in 1975- 1979  In April, 1975 the Khmer Rouge the modern capital of Cambodia and forced all of the residents out of the cities and into the country sides to work  Goal- Cambodia becomes a Communist peasant farming society and a classless society  Slaughtered anyone perceived to be a threat to their goal, and ethnic minorities  Response- Vietnam sent in forces to over throw the Khmer Rouge in December 1978 2,400,000 people died. 10.  The genocide lasted from 1992-1995  Six republics of Yugoslavia were formed  Each republic had different races/ ethnic groups  Josip Tito held tensions in check when he died chaos returned  Bosnia gained independence, causing fighting  Serbian soldiers attacked Bosnian capital  The Serbian’s goal was to ethnically cleanse Bosnia by ridding all Muslims  Muslims were starved, tortured, and raped There were 381 concentration camps, 100,000 killings, and 20,000 rapes WAOI

12.  Began in 2003  Tension between the Arabs and Darfuri Africans  Omar al-Bashir seized power and became leader of Sudan  Bashir wanted an all Arab Sudan, so he tried to wipe out Darfuri Africans  Started a campaign to kill or displace Darfuri Africans  Janjaweed are Arab militias used by the Sudanese government  Janjaweed turned conflicts violent  Janjaweed attacks were mass killings, rapes, whippings, cattle theft, and burning of villages  Janjaweed would mutilate African women and contaminate wells  Adult men slaughtered and girls were forced into sex slavery  ICC ordered arrest of Bashir in 2009 This is still happening today.
