Forces
2
Force What is Force –A force is a push or a pull that acts on an object. –A force can cause a resting object to move or a moving object to accelerate.
3
Forces How do we show a force? We use vector arrows to show direction. We use magnitude to show amount of force. EXAMPLE: 3N
4
Force The units for force are Newton's (N). Newtons can be broken down into Kgm/s 2
5
Forces What if we have more than one force acting on an object? Net Force is the total amount of forces combined.
6
Forces To find the net force of an object simply add up all of the forces acting on it. Example: If Logan pushes Mrs. G with 10 newtons and Jillian pushes Mrs. G in the same direction With 5 newtons the net force is 15 newtons.
7
Forces Balanced Forces When forces are balanced the net force is zero. Example: Tug of War.
8
Forces Unbalanced Forces When forces are unbalanced the object accelerates. Example: In Class Demo
9
Friction –Friction is a force that is in the opposite direction of the moving object. There are 4 types of friction. Static FrictionRolling Friction Sliding FrictionFluid Friction
10
Static Friction Static Friction is friction that acts on objects that are not moving. Example: Walking. As I walk it is static friction that keeps my shoe from sliding backwards. On ice we loose that static friction and we slip.
11
Sliding Friction Sliding friction is the force that applies the force in the opposite direction of the sliding object
12
Rolling Friction Friction that acts on rolling objects.
13
Fluid Friction The opposite force of an object moving through a fluid. (Gases are considered Fluids) Air resistance is also fluid friction.
14
Gravity The earths gravity is the downward force on all objects. How much you weigh is actually how much gravity is pulling on your body
