Objectives Students will be able to classify and identify elements as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Students will be able to create a pie chart using the elements of the earth’s crust. Students will be able to analyze and describe the chemical changes of a candle.
4
Review: Classifying Elements Elements can be divided into three main groups: Metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Examples of metals: lead, copper, tin, aluminum, and iron Examples of nonmetals: sulfur, iodine, and oxygen Examples of metalloids: silicon and germanium
5
Properties of Elements Characteristics of elements you can easily measure or observe: Phase Mass Solubility Color Odor
6
Physical Properties of metals and nonmetals Metals Good conductors of heat and electricity Shiny in appearance (have luster) Malleable Ductile All metals are solids except mercury (mercury is a liquid) Nonmetals Poor conductors of heat and electricity Dull in appearance (lack luster) Shatter or crumble when struck Nonductile Exist in all three physical states(solid, liquid, & gas)
