2 Description of Psychiatry Psychiatrists are medical specialists that diagnose and treat patients with mental health issues. Psychiatrists order and oversee diagnostic tests and procedures, formulate treatment plans and offer psychotherapeutic and medicinal treatment. Though often confused with psychologists, psychiatrists are different because of their ability to prescribe medication.

3 Duties and Responsibilities Interview disturbed patients Offer care to suicidal patients Conduct personal and medical interviews Evaluate medical test results Oversee the work of assistants and medical technicians Prescribe appropriate medication

4 Earnings A psychiatrists earnings depend on his or her experience, patient workload, and location of employment. Median annual earnings for psychiatrists were $212,736 in 2012. 5 Advancement and Employment Opportunities Most psychiatrists start out working for insurance companies as independent contractors. Psychiatrists practicing in a group or HMO setting can receive benefits by corporate policies, which may include paid vacations, holidays, and sick days; life and health insurance; and retirement benefits. Advancement is possible through the starting of one’s own practice.
