WHALES OF FUN! A marine mammal project Scaffolding for building a Web page Stellar Sea Lions

OBJECTIVES Students will individually research topics on the internet, acquiring information on a specific marine mammal. Students will learn to storyboard a multimedia project Students in small groups will build a web page on the marine mammal which they have researched. Students will share their web pages with the members of the science club and possibly put them on the net. Guadalupe Sea Lion Pup

Research Students will research their self-selected marine mammal, using the internet. Students must acquire or produce themselves at least two photos or drawings. Students must find at least one URL on a related topic. Students must find information to be included on the web page Whale Drawings

Required Research Information Description Habitat Location(s) where the animal is usually found Animal’s place in the food web Problems plaguing the animal, such as endangerment issues and habitat depletion Humphrey, the Humpback Whale

Storyboarding Club Advisor will demonstrate how to make a storyboard for a multimedia project Students then will work in small groups to build a storyboard for a three to four page web project. Jambo, the sea otter

Storyboard Format Page one is the Index/home page Page two is a page describing the animal Page three explains the habitat of the animal and the animal’s place in the food web Page four is optional, describing the problem the animal encounters, such as endangerment and habitat/food depletions Sea Elephant Pup

Making the Web Page Beginning students will be given a template with instructions on how to individualize it. template Intermediate students will be given step- by-step instructions for building a web page.step- by-step instructions Advanced students may build a web page independently. Harbor Seals

Sharing of Web Pages Club members will share their web pages with the club. If students have access, they will post their web pages on the net. Beethoven and Mozart, Stellar Sea Lion pups

Timeline Research: Two to three days Storyboarding: Two days Building the web pages: Five to eight days Sharing the web pages: One day Total project: Ten to fourteen days Whale fluke
