2
2 Contents Phase I: Status: What’s complete What will be complete by 31Mar08 What will over-run Principal milestones – overview Organisation Phase I finances: Outturn forecast Request for contingency Option for re-definition of scope Status of tracker build Phase II finances: Conclusions/issues

3 Phase I: status See RA, AN
4
4 Principal milestones
5
5 Progress since Jun08 September 2007 June 2007 February 2008
6
6 Organisation
7
Project-management: Discussions started within collaboration to define MOM team: Plan to start Nov07 iMICE positions, Project Manager/Technical Coordinator and MICE Operations Managers must be agreed by MICE Collaboration Board ant CM19 (Oct07) New team:
8
8 Organisation Project management team established: A.N. Other PPD: P. Flower, in place from October Took responsibility for testing completed Q35s and D2 (and other things!) MOM team now in place: Past: Blondel, Long, Zisman Present: Gianninni (present MOM) Future: Apollonio, Kyberd, Ellis, Grauhlich, Long, Bross, Zisman, Kaplan, Blondel Project on much better footing, but: PM (R.Apsimon) has applied for early retirement Consultation over successor has started P.Flower has applied for early retirement Other staff have applied for redundancy/retirment Uncertain times! WBS: change in infrastructue work package manager: T.Hayler replaced C.Nelson from January 2008 Preparation of reports: Much better, but still some work to do … For Phase II plan to set up a data-base (in common with UKNF) …

9 Phase I finances:
10
10 Phase I finances:
11
11 Phase I: possible re-definition of scope Outturn forecast in excess of allocaiton +WM + contingency Therefore seek a re-scope that will bring the total spend+requitement with the £9.72 envelope Option: Move procurement/installation of magnetic shield walls out of Phase I Undertake redesign with a view to simplification of design and reduction of cost as part of Phase II Technical details from Andy Nichols Magnetic shielding will be required in Phase II Possibilities for cost reduction: Reduction in quantity of iron –Thickness –Perhaps north (linac side) wall need not be as thick »Extreme possibility: north wall is not needed (unlikely) If less weight of iron, then may be possible to simplify support –But, structure needs to support magnetic forces
12
12 Phase I: possible re-definition of scope Present schedule for build of magnetic shielding: Start April; complete end of June Heavy civil construction in conflict with running MICE with tracker: Concrete dust/metal swarf incompatible with tracker electronics Agreement with FNAL precludes heavy construction work in vicinity of VLPC cryostats (VLPC cassettes are D0 live spares) Significant schedule issue Delay/redesign magnetic shielding: pros and cons: Pros: Design for a cost saving: reduce capital cost and perhaps a staged build Staged build: –Would allow ‘just enough’ steel to be installed for each stage in MICE build up –May allow data-taking to be scheduled in between sections of build Cons: Redesign implies delay to installation start and increase in staff effort required Staged build might result in an overall increase in cost: –Though the spend profile may be more easily managed
13
13 Tracker #1 complete in R8 Tracker #2: All stations available and QAed Waveguides in production Expect to polish at FNAL in March All components for space frame available Will complete fabrication of tracker #2 by end of March Location pieces for installation in solenoid all manufactured Procedure defined, space-envelope discussion will be coordinated by PM Spare stations: Bodies being machined, will complete and QA by end of March 2008 Status of tracker build: mechanical
14
14 Status of tracker build: station QA
15
15 Station QA summary:
16
16 Status of tracker build: slow controls
17
17 Production cryostats 1 and 2 ran smoothly at operating temperature But, cassette in cryo #2 has developed an internal leak and will have to be pulled Cryo #3 is cooling down Operating not yet satisfactory (6.2K at 60Hz?) Cryo #4 has its cassettes installed Almost ready for cool down AFE power mods complete for Cryo #1,2,3 No longer have low voltage power problems Target is to ship system (Cryo #1 and Cryo #3) by end of February Status of tracker build: cryo system and VLPCs
18
18 VLPC system: photos:
19
19 Significant progress in D & A FPGA code: Issues: Programmable look-up table code (S.Galagadera) support Debugging of AFPGA buffer –Ongoing Test of PLL on frequency-varying ISIS clock Goal: complete by April Zero-suppression scheme implemented Fast-clear implemented Testing of VLSB has revealed some issues: Set-up time unacceptably long, implementation of correction for this uncovered some ‘bugs’ Work is in hand to correct this Goal: send system back to RAL in March Status of tracker build: electronics and DAQ
20
20 Read-out and DAQ: timing signals: Timing r/o demonstrated: Crucial for step V
21
21 Status of tracker build: schedule Tracker schedule: Tracker #2 to be fabricated by end March ’08 (means assembled space frame in coffin) Cosmic ray test of tracker #1 started before end March ’08 Continuing resolution of installation: Run with cosmics, install in solenoid, run with cosmics? Run with cosmics, install/deinstall in Hall, run with beam?
22
22 Phase II finances: MICE-UK Phase II deliverables:
23
23 Phase II finances: profile in line with PPRP recommendation As presented at September OsC: STFC funding cuts likely to imply a significant reduction in resources …
24
24 Phase II finances: guidelines from J.Womersley Seek to defend a continuing accelerator R&D programme at the level of ~£10M / year Guidelines for the MICE-UK and UKNF programmes:
25
25 Phase II finances: first attempt to satisfy guidelines:
26
26 Phase II finances: consequences: Significant (and unrecoverable) delay: Above assumes contract for focus-coil modules is let on the 29Feb08 Implies first payment this financial year To get close to requested profile, had to introduce arbitrary 3 month delay to start of manufacture of second set of coils Moves payments into financial year 2010/11 11 months 14 months Urgent action is required!
27
27 Risks: Scientific: MICE results lose impact because results are not timely Damage to international partnership: Integral of cost to international partners rises significantly STFC/RAL reputation: Over the past year, the international collaboration (the US in particular) has increased its investment in MICE Phase II For the UK to delay the schedule of the experiment risks not only the timely inward investment, but the UK reputation as a reliable collaborator and host
28
Personal comment: Everything to play for! Only ‘elephant in the room’ is the target dust issue Being addressed appropriately Much to do but: Likely to meet be ready for Christmas shutdown Likely to be able to carry out work required in Christmas shutdown Tracker likely to be available when required for Steps I and II Phase II: International and UK preparations well advanced Lack of UK resources beyond March 2008 may hold up project! Conclusions/issues September OsC
29
29 Conclusions and principal issues: Conclusions: The increase in the pace of the MICE-UK project has now been maintained since June 2007 Technical progress from RA and AN … The outturn forecast is in excess of the £9.72M envelope A possible re-scope option (magnetic shield wall redesign) has been identified Issues: Phase I resources need to be carried over into financial year 2008/09 Since some magnetic shielding walls are required for Phase II, the best way forward needs to be identified: Noting that the infrastructure project now has gathered momentum, the project teams preference is: –To review rapidly the design with a view to reducing cost and identifying whether a staged build is possible; and –To push ahead as close to the present schedule as possible It is urgent to resolve the funding of Phase II
