Pre 19 th Century No national education system, few opportunities Grammar Schools – run by private foundations with donations from merchants Charity Schools – founded by religious organizations to provide some education for poor children Dame Schools – schools that taught basic writing and math to children of poor tradesmen Public Schools – available only for the very, very wealthy

19 th Century Sunday schools – religious instruction that became popular in the 18 th century. Began expanding to day schools in the 19 th century 1833 – legal limits placed on children’s factory work and some government money given for schooling

1870 Education Act Funding for schools increased throughout the 19 th century 1869 – the National Education League begins a movement for compulsory, non-religious education for all children 1870 Education Act – created school boards to provide schooling in unserved areas with nondenominational teaching 1880 – compulsory education for ages 5-10. Later laws extended the age to 12 and to blind and deaf children

Early 20 th Century 1902 – school boards abolished in favor of local education authorities. Provisions made for secondary school as well 1906-1907 – provisions made for children to receive meals at school and medical inspections 1918 – compulsory education until age 14, no fees for elementary education. More centralization of education

Education Act of 1944 Free secondary education for all Local Education Authorities (LEAs) – reorganization of secondary schooling (grammar, secondary modern, technical) 11 plus – national exam at age 11 Compulsory education raised to 15

Education Reform Act of 1988 Establishment of comprehensive schools in the 1960s 1988 – schools could opt out of local control for national control and funding
