3 History of Spaceflight In 1879, Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky established the basics of rocket science. Scientists still use his “Rocket Equation” when designing rockets. He is considered the father of space travel for his pioneering of rocketry and his theoretical description of a man-made satellite.

4 History of Spaceflight Following WW II and the destruction of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the potential of rocketry as a weapon of war ignited research into the subject of rockets. Sergei Korolyov was the chief designer of the Soviet R-7 Missile project and first proposed the idea of using the weapon to put a satellite in space.
