Class Notes 4: DNA transcription and translation: The process of Protein Synthesis

I. Protein Synthesis A.The process in which cells make proteins from the DNA instructions is called protein synthesis. B.Protein synthesis has two parts: 1.Transcription 2.Translation

II. Transcription A.DNA can’t leave the nucleus. B.An mRNA copy is made by base pairing and sent to the ribosome C.The mRNA is a smaller copy of the DNA instructions

III. Translation A.Step 1 A ribosome attaches to an mRNA strand.

B. Step 2 1.The tRNA molecule delivers its amino acid to the ribosome. 2.The tRNA anticodon must match the mRNA codon.

C. Step 3 1. The tRNA leaves behind its amino acid. 2. The ribosome (rRNA) forms peptide bonds between the amino acids to make a protein.

Summary What are the 2 main parts of protein synthesis? What is the job of the tRNA, rRNA and mRNA?
