The U.S. Civil War What do you already know? What do you wonder about? Why does it matter? Was it justified for the North to conquer the South to “save the Union”? Was it justified for the South to fight a war to be independent?

Civil War Key Facts 1 st Modern war – railroads, machine guns, telegraphs, cannons, steamships. “One estimate of the death toll is that ten percent of all Northern males 20–45 years old, and 30 percent of all Southern white males aged 18–40 perished. From 1861 to 1865 about 800,000 soldiers lost their lives” More slaves freed each year – Emancipation Proclamation Jan 1, 1863. Lincoln assassinated 5 days after surrender.

Timeline 1860 Republican candidate, Abe Lincoln, wins Presidential election against split parties. 1860-61 Deep South slave states secede. 1861 Lincoln refuses to recognize Confederate peace envoys. (April) South Carolina attacks and captures Ft. Sumter, in Charleston, SC. 1863 Union begins winning some battles. 1865 Confederacy surrenders.

HW HW: Write a brief essay regarding whether the Union's invasion of the Confederacy was justified. Quote both the Declaration of Causes and Lincoln's First Inaugural Address in your answer. Feel free to raise hard questions OR to take a strong position.

HW EITHER write a couple paragraphs about whether or not you'd have been willing to be a Union or Confederate soldier OR Write about whether or not the Gettysburg Address was a “big lie”.
