New Advanced Higher Subject Implementation Events Statistics Unit Assessment at Advanced Higher

Unit Assessment – Recap Flexible and open Assessment Standards and Evidence Requirements in Units Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one outcome or Unit – combined assessments More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching

Unit Assessment Support As at Higher, Assessment Support will be provided which you can use to: Assess your candidates Adapt for your own assessment programmes Help you develop your own assessments your own assessments

Unit Assessment Support at Advanced Higher – Key Features Valid from August 2015 Complements and supports learning and teaching Assess competence against Unit Outcomes and Assessment Standards Designed to encourage professional judgement Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered

Unit Assessment Support at Advanced Higher – Approaches Package 1 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 2 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 3 Portfolio approach – naturally occurring evidence

Assessment Support Package: Units Statistics Data Analysis and Modelling – 1 Outcome Statistical Inference – 2 Outcomes Hypothesis Testing – 2 Outcomes

Unit Assessment Support What the package covers in summary Judging evidence Judging evidence tables Re-assessment arrangements Assessment grid and marking guidance Appendix 1: Assessment for candidates

Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Outcome 1 SQA has two methods for meeting the Assessment Standards Method A For Outcome 1: each Assessment Standard will be met when the candidate has successfully demonstrated more than half the points across the entire Assessment Standard. Method B For Outcome 1: each Assessment Standard will be met when the candidate has successfully demonstrated competence in more than half the sub-skills for the Assessment Standard.

Assessment Standards Making assessment judgements Assessment for candidates 1.2 Applying skills to probability theory The sub-skills in the Assessment Standard are: 1.working with theoretical and experimental probabilities 2.calculating conditional probabilities Sub-skill 1 is attached to question 2 Sub-skill 2 is attached to question 3 Candidates must successfully demonstrate at least 5 out of 8 points. Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence Table – Outcome 1

Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Method A

Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Method B

Unit Assessment Support: What the package covers Re-assessment For Outcome 1 The same as it is for Maths. Different questions should be used.

Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Outcome 2 The Statistical Inference and Hypothesis Testing Units have two outcomes Each Outcome 2 requires candidates to: Carry out a statistical investigation 

Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Outcome 2 Assessment Standards Making assessment judgements The candidate has: Assessment for candidates 2.1 Specifying the problem and planning the investigation 1.introduced and explained the background and context of the investigation 2.discussed appropriate statistical approaches considered, including rationale behind decisions made 3.formulated the statistical question Possible investigations could be based around the link between SIMD score and academic achievement, sentence and word length comparison of two novels etc. Exemplification of the above examples can be found in the Course and Unit Support Notes. 2.2 Selecting relevant data 1.identified the population to be sampled 2.considered sampling strategies, outlining reasons for chosen sampling method and giving a clear description of how the sample(s) was identified and selected 3.discussed and shown awareness of issues/problems when collecting the data 2.3 Presenting and analysing the data 1.clearly presented the data using appropriate statistical diagrams 2.analysed the data using appropriate statistical calculations 2.4 Communicating the conclusion 1.clearly communicated their conclusion based on an analysis of the data with clear linkage between the statistical inference and conclusion

Unit Assessment Support: What the package covers Re-assessment For Outcome 2 Assessors should use their professional judgement to determine whether minor revisions to the investigation would allow the candidate to meet the Assessment Standards in full, or whether a new investigation should be undertaken.

Workshop 1 Unit Assessment Workshop Aims To understand the assessment and evidence requirements of Unit Assessment To consider a range of ways of generating evidence for the Unit Assessment Support provided Using the materials provided, discuss: conducting Unit Assessments in your Centre making assessment judgments in particular for Outcome 2
