Agenda 1/6/15 1. Welcome back/find new seats. 2. Bell work review of last semester (15 mins Think- Pair-Share). 3. Understanding different political/economic ideologies spectrum. Objective: SWBAT categorize the terms liberal, conservative, communism, and capitalism.

Hitler’s Rise to Power Born in Austria. Enlisted during WWI and was shocked by Germany’s surrender. Found the Treaty of Versailles degrading. Arrested at the Beer Hall Putsch. Realized he must gain power legally.

Hitler’s Rise to Power Came in 2 nd in the presidential elections, named Chancellor of Germany. Leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party).

Liberal Definition: Believing that government should be active in supporting social and political change.

Liberal Economic Characteristics: More government support or control of the economy. Government helps out more when times are tough. Political Characteristics: Open to change and reform. Individual freedoms.

Communism Definition: Most extreme liberal ideology. Production is held in common, without social classes. Totalitarian state is present with one leader controlling all aspects of peoples’ lives.

Communism Economic Characteristics: HATES capitalism- believes it is unfair for the working class. No free markets or private property allowed. Political Characteristics: Totalitarian state is present. Communist countries also tend to bond with other Communist countries (international movement).

Communism Examples (so far): Stalin’s Soviet Union (also called the USSR).

Fascism Definition: A government system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly oppressing opposition and criticism, controlling all industry and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism.

Fascism Economic Characteristics: Union between businesses and the State, with the State telling the business what to do, with private ownership. Businesses are privately owned but the state dictates outputs and investments. Political Characteristics: Extreme nationalism and dedication to the State. One leader who generally controls the State.

Fascism Examples: Hitler and the Nazi Party, Nazi Germany.
