What seemed to be the value of treaties with the Native Americans? Remember the Treaty of Gaudalupe Hidalgo? (ended the Mexican American War, included a provision that land rights of Mexicans in the area would be recognized by the US, but 4/5 th lost their land) Every hear of the Burlingame Treaty of 1868? (promised to guarantee government protection for Chinese immigrants) In general – what impression do you have of 1800’s federal treaties? Treaties

Since most of the Southwest lands were territories and not states, Mexican-Americans lacked representation in Washington, DC Los Gorras Blancas – (the white caps/hats), resorted to more violent methods Movement supported by the Knights of Labor Development of cultural groups to protect and promote Hispanic American culture Mexican-Americans

Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton created National Women’s Suffrage Association 1906 – WY, UT, CO, ID – only states allowing women to vote Increasing number of women receiving a “real” education and professional training Increasing number of women involved in the WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) – promoted a ban on alcohol Women’s Rights
