Good Day 11/7/2015 Starter Question for today: How do you know if something is “Real”? Today we will be.. Discuss matter and non-matter Discuss matter and non-matter Goal: Be able to distinguish between matter and nonmatter Goal: Be able to distinguish between matter and nonmatter
2
Please take out a sheet of paper and write this down. (you will keep this so a note book is a good place) Matter: anything that has _______ and takes up _______. Nonmatter: anything that does not have ______ or take up ________.
3
Please make this table on your Paper MatterNon Matter
4
List the following as matter or non- matter Water Helium Helium Data Data The universe The universe The universe A dollar bill Light Light Sound Cell Phone signals Tomatoes Knowledge An image in the mirror Paper Oxygen Heat Space Air The number in your bank account. Energy The number 4
5
Classifying Matter What categories would you break Matter up into? Hint it has everything to do with how they take up space.
6
Matter Defined Liquid no definite shape but definite volume Example: is water or oil Gas No definite shape or volume Example: is helium Matter Solid Definite shape and volume Example: is your table
7
Anti Matter? Video on Matter Video on Matter Video on Matter Video on Antimatter Video on Antimatter Video on Antimatter Video on how the two were created Video on how the two were created Video on how the two were created
8
Helium If you compress helium into a tank it has a lot of mass, and you can fill a balloon so it takes up space. This goes for Oxygen, Air Link back to list Link back to list Link back to list

Data Data, is difficult, because it “takes up space” when you store it in a physical format (like on a disk or jumpdrive) This also goes for Knowledge But it doesn’t literally take up space we just arrange the matter so that it stores the data. Link back to list Link back to list Link back to list

Light Light is energy, it has no mass and takes up no space. A room can be “filled” with Light but that does not mean that you can not fit other thing into that room. This is also true for Sound, heat and energy. Link back to list Link back to list Link back to list

The Universe and Space Space is quite literally nothing, it is the absence of everything. (like dark is the absence of light) The universe is basically specs of matter in the space. The pieces of matter are very far apart with nothing (space) in between them. Link back to list Link back to list Link back to list
