7.46 HUMANISM Describe how humanism led to a revival of classical learning and fostered a new interest in the arts including a balance between intellect and religious faith.
3
HUMANISM A big part of the Renaissance was humanism. The philosophy that all people should strive to be educated in the classical arts, literature, and science. It looked for realism and human emotion in art. It also said that it was okay for people to pursue comfort, riches and beauty.
4
During the middle ages art and learning were centered on the church and religion. At the start of the 14 th century, people became less interested in thinking about God, heaven and saints, and more interested in thinking about themselves, their surroundings and their everyday lives. The values and ideals popular during the European Renaissance can be described by the term secular humanism: Secular, meaning not religious and humanism, meaning placing the study and progress of human nature at the center of interests.
5
STOP AND THINK What was one thing that humanism added to art during the Renaissance? (hint: there are two) What would be an example on one of those in the picture below? What are not examples of the two?
6
The rise of Humanism during the Renaissance can be seen in paintings created by Renaissance artists. I want you to be able to learn how to tell the difference between paintings from the Renaissance and earlier works of art, just by looking for evidence in the paintings themselves. Works of art created in the Renaissance and primary sources of information about how people lived in Renaissance Europe. You will look for specific clues to make judgments about whether a painting is a Renaissance painting or not.
