Geocaching A hidden treasure hunt

What is geocaching?  It is a game that resembles treasure hunt legends.  Using GPS devices participants navigate to coordinates and then attempt to find hidden containers.

Don't expect golden coins!  Geocache is usualy a small waterproof container that contains:  Logbook: A peace of paper to log your visit and finding  A paper with geocaching rules and instructions for the finder  Some items (treasure!) that finder can keep for himself but only if he leaves another item of aproximately same or greater value. It is usually a simple gift or souvenir.  Geocaches are usually placed on attractive locations in the nature or in the vicinity of some points of interest in the cities. The real reward is visiting those locations.

Other types of geocaches  Besides "tradittional" geocaches, there are some other types:  Mystery or Puzzle Caches: this type may involve complicated puzzles that you will first need to solve to determine the correct coordinates.  Multi-Caches: they involve two or more locations, with the final location being a physical container with a logbook inside. There are many variations, but typically once you’re at the first stage, you will receive a clue to the whereabouts of the second stage. The second stage will have a clue for the third, and so on.  Event Caches, Earth Caches, Cach In Trash Out,…

A brief history  The game started in the year 2000  It became really popular because od wide availability of GPS devices and GPS-enabled smartphones.  There are 2,384,404 active geocaches and over 6 million geocachers worldwide.  You will not find "geocaching" in the dictionary: it is a new word and it has no meaning

What do i need to play the game?  Instead of a paper map it is better to use a GPS device or a smartphone with the possibility of geolocation (almost every smartphone has it) to find the geocache coordinates.  In case of using a smartphone, there are many applications you can use to make your search easier. We suggest the free application c:geo.  Account on geocaching.com, you can make it for free after visiting the webpage  Additionally, it is good to have a pencil (for the geocaching log file) and a few small things which you can exchange for the geocaching gifts for future seekers.

How to play? 1. Register as a member on geocaching.com. It isn't necessary, but it is advisable. 2. Using a map on geocaching.com webpage or your smartphone application you can choose geocaches in your surroundings. Basic information about the point, instructions for the search, and its coordinates will be shown on the page. 3. Use those coordinates and a map to get to the location of the desired geocache. 4. Take a good look around yourself and find the hidden geocache. 5. After finding the geocache, sign the record file. 6. If there is an item or treasure in the container, you may take it if you leave one with a similar or greater value inside. 7. Put the geocache back in the location you found it in. 8. Share your experiences on geocaching.com, c:geo application, geocaching-croatia.com or our social networks, but don't spoil other people's search with too many details.

Geocaching in our project  Make more groups for geocaching with croatian and Italian participants  Each group should have at least one student from Croatia with GPS enabled smartphone  Make accounts on geocaching.com  Install c:geo application (for Android) or similar application on iPhone. After the installation, enter the details of your geocaching.com account.  Search for geocaches…

Geocaching in Požega  At the moment you have five geocaches hidden in Požega  There are many more caches hidden in Papuk geopark, some of them are in park-forest Jankovac which we will visit tomorrow  … and a lot more caches in Italy…
