WRITING YOUR ESSAY Always start your introduction with an attention grabber. When you are ready to move to a new paragraph use transitional words. Transitional words help continue ideas and indicate when there is a shift in writing. Transitional words should be used to make your writing stick together or have coherence. Examples of transitional words include: In addition to Furthermore To begin with The next step First, Second, Third Finally Although Initially.
7
Each paragraph will contain specific information PARAGRAPH ONE Paragraph one is your introduction. Begin paragraph one by indenting and starting with an attention grabber that will make your reader want to know more! Restate the topic of your essay and then introduce the three main supporting details you will use to explain your topic. Conclude your introduction with a transitional sentence that leads into your second paragraph.
8
PARAGRAPHS 2, 3, and 4 Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4 are the body of your essay. When writing paragraphs 2, 3, and 4, be sure to indent, begin with transitional words, incorporate descriptive vocabulary, and support your “main details.”

Now we will take a look at a well written 3.5 Expository Essay. This will give you a visual of what your finished essay should look like! WRITING PROMPT: Everyone has a favorite holiday! What is your favorite holiday and explain why? WOW! There are several different holidays, but Christmas is my favorite. Statistics have shown that over sixty one percent of Americans, choose Christmas as their favorite holiday. The reason Christmas is my favorite holiday is because I get to spend quality time with my family, get gifts, and I get the opportunity to help others. Christmas is by far my favorite holiday! The first reason Christmas is my favorite holiday is because I get to spend quality time with my family. One way we spend quality time is decorating the Christmas tree together. We also have large family feasts with all sorts of food. Last year we had turkey & dressing, pie, corn, greens… Christmas is a time we get to spend with family members that live far away and having quality time with my family is something I really enjoy! The next reason I like Christmas is because it is a time to get great gifts. Gifts are also less expensive during Christmas time. Christmas is the best time for me to ask my parents for the big things I want! For example, last summer I asked my parents for a play station and did not get it. I asked for it again during Christmas time, and SURPRISE!!! On Christmas morning I found it under the tree. Lastly, Christmas is my favorite holiday because I enjoy helping others. Some ways to help others during Christmas time is to give donations, giving gift baskets, food baskets, or taking someone shopping. For example, last Christmas I made quilts for the homeless. I think it’s very important to help brighten someone else’s holiday. In conclusion, Christmas is my favorite holiday of all. Christmas is my favorite because I get to spend time with my family, get gifts, and I also get to help others. Christmas is a time to be thankful, spread love, joy, and happiness to everyone around you.
