Buildings come in many shapes and sizes The tallest buildings in the city are called skyscrapers
3
When designing a building the weather is a big concern The wind can make buildings sway in different directions Swaying can make people on the top floors feel sick
4
Before construction, scientists test the soil to make sure the foundation is safe to build on They test the soil in labs
5
Trucks are used to carry materials off and on to the construction site. Helicopters are used to lift heavy materials up buildings
6
Construction workers are required to wear hard hats while on the site They use hoists to haul concrete and steel up the building
7
The Construction Process Without a good foundation the building would sink Building the foundation is the first step There are 2 types of foundations Deep built and wide built foundations
8
The Construction Process After the foundation is set, the frame is built Typical the frame of a skyscrapers is made of steel beams and columns The steel beams and columns support the floors on the skyscraper
9
The Construction Process When the steel beams are put up and the outer layer of concrete is in, the workers then begin the process of finishing the inside with heating, cooling, plumbing, and adding interior walls
10
The Construction Process Once the building is complete, the owner has to decide what to do with it Some options include, use it as a hotel, lease it out, use it for work space, etc.
