Overview During our field work, we conducted 2 microclimate studies at 7 different sites at HCI on 2 different days. Day 1 On the first day, we rated each of the 7 sites based on our feels. We then measured the temperature of the 7 sites with a Six’s Thermometer – once 15cm above ground and the other 1.5m above ground Day 2 On the second day, we measured the temperature of the 7 different sites with a Six’s Thermometer 1.5m above the ground

Ratings in Day 1 Our legend for the rating is as such: Hottes t WarmCooles t 1234567 A – Top floor of Multistorey Carpark B – Garden outside printing centre C – Open space between canteen and Block C D – Terraces E – Field F – Running Track G – Fountain area outside General Office

6
Hypothesis Based on our ratings in Day 1, we have therefore constructed a hypothesis, which is that concrete areas are generally hotter than non-concrete areas
7
1: Running track
8
1:Running Track Day 1 Temperature measures 27.9 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures 27.8 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 2 Temperature measures 31.5 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Ground is made of rubber and the site is directly under the Sun
10
2:Field
11
Day 1 Temperature measures 27.4 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures 28.7 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 2 Temperature measures 31.9 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Full of vegetation and directly under the Sun
13
3: Terraces
14
Day 1 Temperature measures 28.6 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures 29.0 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 2 Temperature measures 31.3 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Ground is made of concrete and the site is directly under the Sun
16
4: Open space between canteen and Block C
17
Day 1 Temperature measures 26.8 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures 26.9 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 2 Temperature measures 30.4 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Ground is made of concrete and a small amount of breeze was present
19
5: Top floor of Multistorey carpark
20
Day 1 Temperature measures 26.1 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures 26.3 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 1 Temperature measures 30.8 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Ground is made of concrete and the site is directly under the Sun, yet fairly windy
22
6. Garden outside printing room
23
6: Garden outside printing room Day 1 Temperature measures 26.2 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures 26.3 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 2 Temperature measures 31.3 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Full of vegetation and is directly under the Sun
25
7: Fountain area outside General Office
26
Day 1 Temperature measures approximately 26.4 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Temperature measures approximately 26.9 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 15cm above ground Day 2 Temperature measures approximately 30.0 degrees Celsius when the thermometer is placed 1.5m above ground Windy with water nearby, relatively cooling
28
Overall results 1234567 EFDBACG 1234567 DFECGBA 1234567 FEDCABG Day 1 (based on feelings) Day 1 (based on readings) Day 2 (based on readings) 1234567 FDEACBG Class average (based on feelings)
29
Conclusio n Therefore, o Our guessing of temperature based on our feelings are considerably accurate o Surface type, cloud cover, time, proximity to vegetation/water, humidity, wind and so on affect the climate of a site o Our hypothesis is unreliable – a concreted area is not necessarily a warmer area than an area with no concrete o Temperatures taken at 1.5m from the ground are usually cooler than that taken at 15cm from the ground
